With the holiday season right around the corner, many people are already anticipating (sometimes costly) holiday shopping. Add on top of that all of the electricity that is consumed when powering the festive decorations around the house and in the yard. However, there are some things that you can do to cut that energy bill down this holiday season, and keep the bills down year around.
While cooking this holiday season, if you’re using the oven to cook dinner, refrain from opening the door until the meal is ready. Opening the door lets out a lot of heat that the oven has to replenish. Also, crock-pots, microwaves, and toasters are more energy efficient than conventional ovens, and are best used for side dishes.
When looking for new lights to brighten your home, remember that LED strings of colorful lights are very bright and last 10 times longer than their incandescent counterparts. Just one incandescent bulb takes the same amount of energy as two 24 foot long LED strings. You can also use outlet timers to control when your decorations turn on and off, which is a great, hassle free way to keep tabs on energy usage.
Changing your household bulbs can also help. Switching from incandescent bulbs to CFLs or LED bulbs will cut your year round energy costs. Make sure that the last one out hits the light to cut your costs even further. If you have guests coming to visit (or if you yourself need a reminder), be sure to have them shut off lights, televisions, and fans when they leave a room.
Keep green in your pockets this holiday season by following these tips!
