Celebrating our Texas Veterans

Independence Day 2015 - Texas VeteransSource Power & Gas wants to thank our customers who have served in the military, honoring our forefathers who have served this country since its inception when we declared independence from British rule on July 4, 1776.

The Origin of Independence Day

Thomas Jefferson drafted the Declaration of Independence between June 11 and June 28, 1776. The document formally declared the colonies’ decisions to secede from British rule and become their own nation: The United States of America. Promising the “unalienable Rights . . . Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness,” the Declaration of Independence was signed by 56 individuals from all of the colonies. These individuals, along with countless others, were tired of the oppression laid upon them by the British Empire.

At the time, the Thirteen Colonies were at war with Great Britain. Great Britain had been plunging into debt since the end of the Seven Years’ War in 1763 and as a result, the parliament decided to increase taxation within the colonies. In 1773, the colonies rejected this taxation with Massachusetts residents dumping a shipment of tea into the Boston Harbor in what became known as the Boston Tea Party. Britain sought to punish the colony for this act by instituting the Coercive Acts of 1774. Many colonists saw this as a violation of Britain’s constitution, and revolted, leading to war.

Today, the fireworks displays, while beautiful, are actually to remind us of the conflicts between the United States and Great Britain. The sounds of cannons and musket fire were common around the time the Declaration of Independence was ratified, filling the air on a daily basis with as many booms and bangs as we hear in a single nighttime fireworks display.

Recognizing Source Power & Gas Veterans

This Independence Day, Source Power & Gas wants to recognize our Veterans here in Texas. Without them, we would not have the liberties we currently enjoy. They, like those who fought in the American Revolutionary War, fight and fought for our independence and liberty. So, to all of our customers who have served, are serving, and will serve in the future, we thank you!
